How To Cut a Blooming Onion

It’s not hard to cut a blooming onion – you just need the right technique:

  • Cut 1/2 inch off the top of the onion and peel off the outer layer.
  • Flip the onion over so that it sits flat on the cut side (with the root side up).
  • Starting 1 inch from the top (root), cut downward all the way to the bottom. (The onion pieces should stay attached to the root at the top.) Make 8 slices going all the way around the top of the onion, like a pie.
  • Spread the petals. Flip the onion over again so that the root is down, and gently spread apart the onion petals to make it bloom.

Low Carb Blooming Onion FAQs

Is a blooming onion keto friendly?

Most blooming onions from a restaurant are going to be breaded with flour and deep fried, so definitely not keto friendly.

Fortunately, this keto blooming onion recipe is perfectly keto friendly, thanks to the pork rind and almond flour breading.

What kind of almond flour is okay to use?

For the right texture, it’s important to use super fine blanched almond flour for this low carb baked blooming onion.

Can I use coconut flour?

No, sorry. Coconut flour doesn’t work as well as a breading.

If you’re looking for something with coconut flour, try coconut flour blueberry muffins instead, or one of my other coconut flour recipes.

Can you make it without pork rinds?

Yes, you can substitute the pork rinds with more almond flour. Howwever, it will be less crispy this way.

Keto Blooming Onion Recipe (7)

Keto Blooming Onion Storage Instructions

Can you make it ahead?

I would recommend making this recipe right before serving, as it will be best served fresh and straight from the oven! It will get soggy as it sits.

How to store a gluten-free blooming onion

Store any leftover blooming onion in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

Can you freeze keto blooming onion?

I don’t recommend freezing it – the breading will be soggy after reheating.

How to reheat a blooming onion

For best results, reheat blooming onion on a cooling rack (so that the hot air surrounds the onion) in a 375 degree F oven or an air fryer.

There are so many different types of ONIONS. This appears to be a great recipe, however the one thing NOT mentioned is the TYPE of onion best suited for this.
I usually only have the typical cooking onions. I wondered which one you use in your recipe?

    • Maya | Wholesome Yum

Hi Joanne, This recipe uses a white onion, but would work with any large onion.

Could I deep fry this rather than bake?

    Reply

    • Maya | Wholesome Yum

Hi Simon, We haven’t tried that yet, and aren’t sure if the breading would stand up to deep frying. Please let us know how it goes if you try it!

Hi,What can be substituted for pork rinds?

    • Maya | Wholesome Yum

Hi Mike, You can use additional almond flour instead, but it won’t be as crispy as using a combination.

How much more Almond Flour do I use to replace the pork rinds?

        • Maya | Wholesome Yum

It would be the same amount, 1.5 cups.

Hi, can I use bacon fat instead of the pork rinds?

      Reply

      • Maya | Wholesome Yum

Hi Renee, No, that wouldn’t work. Pork rinds are used for breading for a crispy exterior, bacon fat is just a fat/oil.
