Hannah Waddingham stuns at Earthshot awards next to Prince William (2024)

From starring in two Christmas adverts to a stunning appearance on the green carpet at the Eartshot Prize in Singapore today, Hannah Waddingham has been inescapable this past week - not that anyone is complaining.

The Ted Lassostar, 49, brought some much needed glamour to the ceremony in the absence of Prince William's wife Kate who remained at home to support Prince George with his exams.

And while there may be some level of cheesiness associated with her other big presenting gig this year - the Eurovision Song Contest - there was certainly no hint of that today as she took her place alongside the future King and Hollywood A-lister Cate Blanchett.

Hannah, 49, donned a glitzy black velour ballgown with an emerald sash trailing behind, and lookedperfectly coordinated with Prince William, who looked dapper in a sharp velour suit and dickie bow.

As the pair strolled in on a green carpet for the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony, it was Waddingham's who commanded attention in her stunning attire, with her hair styled in Marilyn Monroe-esque tightly tousled curls.

The Ted Lasso star opted for a glamorous makeup look for the event, with dramatic pink eyeshadow and matching lipstick.

This year's Eurovision host donned an over-sized poppy to mark Remembrance Sunday and posed up a storm for photographers behind the bottle green back drop.

It's the latest sign of the actressfast becoming the nation's sweetheartafter a decades-long climb to the top.

For the 49-year-old London-born actress, being the face of this year's festive M&S advert, is fuelling her status of becoming a national treasure: relatable, down-to-earth and quintessentially British.

On top of the exposure M&S's ad campaign inevitably brings, Hannah is is also the face of the drinks firm Baileys' festive ad, and, next summer, stars in the latest Mission: Impossible film alongside Tom Cruise.

She dazzled six months ago, co-presenting the Eurovision Song Contest: a flawless, live, four-hour performance, and much of it in fluent French.

A statuesque 5ft 11in, with an hourglass figure befitting Marilyn Monroe and a singing voice that could rival Maria Callas, you'd think Hannah would be hard to miss.

And yet a household name she was not – until this year.

With decades of experience as a jobbing West End and telly actor, Waddingham has played Tonya Dyke in ITV's hit series Benidorm, toured the UK with Spamalot and was cast as a police officer in ITV drama Murder, They Hope. And an appearance on Pointless Celebrities came in 2017.

However, in 2019, with Waddingham in her mid-forties, the star finally got the long-awaited big break in Ted Lasso that would see her become a household name both in the US and the UK - the show's won 11 Emmys - and she's more than run with the opportunity since.

Waddingham, who shares a daughter with her former love Gianluca Cugnetto but is apparently happily single, bagged the role of Richmond FC owner Rebecca Welton in the hit Apple TV+ series.

Her team had persuaded her team to try out for the role of Ted Lasso and keen to be close to home for daughter Kitty, who had been ill, the stars aligned.

She told The Ellen DeGeneres Show that being cast in the Apple TV+ comedy felt like fate, saying she had silently 'asked the universe' for roles close to home.

She said: 'I'm going to ask the universe for something, which is probably unreasonable but, I'm going to say, "Thank you for making my little girl better," she told Ellen.

In the show, Welton takes control of the club, based at fictional Nelson Road Stadium, as an act of revenge against her cheating ex-husband Rupert - and her raison d'etre becomes trying to run the club into the ground.

However the arrival of US coach, Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), alters her plan and success becomes her number on ambition, as the pair quickly become a team - not romantically - that transforms the club.

Following the astonishing success of the show, where she is thought to have earned upwards of $150,000 per episode, she has urged Hollywood to make use of West End stars, telling the Emmy audience after her win: 'One more thing... West End musical theatre performers need to be on screen more. Please give them a chance, because we won't let you down.'

In addition to Ted Lasso, Hannah has also featured in Game Of Thrones, Sex Education and Benidorm – and boasts two decades (and three Olivier nominations) on Broadway and the West End.

It seems the showbiz world has finally woken up to the Wonder of Waddingham.
